Levante 5-4 Barcelona: Player Ratings
Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Conceded five goals which is a rarity for the German but did very little wrong. Had little chance with any of the goals thanks to the shambolic defence in front of him.
Rating: 7
Nelson Semedo
Really had to do better for Levante’s second goal but wasn’t strong enough and was caught out of position far too often.
Rating: 4
Yerry Mina
Dreadful performance from the Colombian which highlighted why he hasn’t been used. Was all over the place at times and looked super slow up against the Levante attack. Could probably do with a loan move away next season but needs to stay in La Liga.
Rating: 3
Thomas Vermaelen
Did not start well and was then forced off with yet another injury. It’s entirely possible this could have been his last outing in a Barcelona shirt.
Rating: 4
Jordi Alba
Was part of a shambolic defence and could not make up for it with his usual excellent attacking play.
Rating: 5
Ivan Rakitic
Has been great all season but this looked a game too far for the Croatian who looked tired, slow and gave the ball away far too often.
Rating: 5
Sergio Busquets
Won the penalty but otherwise put in an unusually sloppy display, and his blind pass back across goal late on almost gave Levante a sixth goal.
Rating: 5.5
Andres Iniesta
His last away game for Barcelona will not be one he remembers too fondly. Contributed little and was replaced as Valverde searched for a way back into the game.
Rating: 5
Ousmane Dembele
Was so good in midweek but was really disappointing tonight. Saw little of the ball but when he did he couldn’t make an impact.
Rating: 4
Luis Suarez
He scored the penalty to make it 5-4 but was pretty poor all night and seemed to lose his rag towards the end. Had another glorious chance after Denis Suaerz dropped a cross onto his head but could only direct his effort wide.
Rating: 3
Philippe Coutinho
Scored a hat-trick and all of Barcelona’s best moments came through the Brazilian. The only real bright spot on a miserable night.
Rating: 9
Gerard Pique
Replaced the injured Vermaelen at the back and Barcelona were better for it. Still made some mistakes but his leadership was needed as the visitors almost completed an unlikely comeback.
Rating: 6.5
Denis Suarez
Another bright cameo off the bench and continues to press his case to continue at the club.
Rating: 6.5
Paco Alcacer
Came on and did absolutely nothing.
Rating: 4
The Team
The defence was terrible and yet somehow Barcelona almost pulled off a miraculous comeback that would have maintained their unbeaten streak. They didn’t and suffer a first La Liga defeat of the season and that’s a real shame.
Rating: 4
Ernesto Valverde
Leaving Messi out of the squad altogether was an odd decision (was it really so he could play in a meaningless friendly in South Africa?), but his omission wasn’t to blame for an awful defensive showing. Samuel Umtiti’s injury meant Thomas Vermaelen had to come in but playing Yerry Mina alongside him against an in-form Levante was the wrong decision. The Barcelona boss will probably cop the blame for this one, but Mina, Vermaelen, Dembele and Luis Suarez were all awful.
Rating: 5
Man of the match
Philippe Coutinho.
