Barcelona 4-1 Roma Player Ratings

Marc-André ter Stegen

Made a couple of truly great saves in the second half to deny Roma, although he’ll be disappointed not to have kept a clean sheet.

Rating: 8

Nélson Semedo

A welcome return to the starting line-up and a really good showing. Had an early scare when Edin Dzeko went down in the box but there was barely any contact. He looked great in possession and enjoyed running at Roma.

Rating: 8

Samuel Umtiti

A few shaky moments at the back although he got better as the game wore on. Had a hand in the second goal as his effort hit the post and his presence ensured Manolas forced the ball home.

Rating: 6.5

Gerard Piqué

Looked a lot better than against Sevilla at the weekend and grabbed Barcelona’s third goal of the night. He now has 12 Champions League goals, the joint third highest for a defender, only Roberto Carlos (16) and Ivan Helguera (15) have more.

Rating: 7

Jordi Alba

Started off really brightly and offered his usual attacking outlet down the left flank. Wasn’t quite at his best but still an important presence out wide for Barca.

Rating: 7

Sergi Roberto

Was back in midfield with Nelson Semedo at right-back which was a bit of a surprise move by Ernesto Valverde. Made some important tackles and importantly avoided the booking that would have seen him suspended for the second leg.

Rating: 6

Ivan Rakitic

Thought he’d opened the scoring but his effort hit the post. Otherwise was yet another very solid performance from the Croatian.

Rating: 7.5

Sergio Busquets

So good to see him back in the team and he helped steady the team. Not convinced he’s 100 per cent but his presence was important and helped the team to victory.

Rating: 6.5

Andrés Iniesta

Had some really bright moments but like the rest of the Barca team it was hardly vintage stuff. Looked brighter after the break and played most of the game before being replaced.

Rating: 7

Lionel Messi

Like Busquets he still doesn’t look quite fit but he still caused Roma problems. Tested Alisson on several occasions with shots from range and Roma were alert to his danger and regularly surrounded him as soon as he was in possession.

Rating: 7

Luis Suárez

Looked off colour for most of the night and his touch in particular was poor. However, he popped up late on to restore Barcelona’s three-goal lead and it was a really important goal. Dzeko’s away goal had given Roma hope, but Suarez’s strike put Barca firmly back in charge.

Rating: 6.5

Paulinho

Came on for Busquets and did OK.

Rating: 6.5

Andre Gomes

Was only given the last seven minutes as he replaced Sergi Roberto.

Rating: 6

Denis Suarez

Just five minutes but another decent little cameo from Denis.

Rating: 6.5

The Team

This is a difficult one because they were far from their best but still won 4-1, in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The performance was OK, but the result is excellent.

Rating: 7

Ernesto Valverde

Made a few changes with Semedo back in and Roberto back into midfield. Would have been great to see Ousmane Dembele but it wasn’t to be. Not a great watch, but you just can’t argue with the result.

Rating: 6

Man of the match

No-one really stood out - so I’m going for Semedo.
