What now for Barca after Griezmann snub?

Barcelona’s summer transfer plans have been thrown into disarry after Antoine Griezmann finally decided he didn’t fancy a move to the Camp Nou after all and will stay at Atletico Madrid.

It’s all horribly similar to last summer when the club spent ages trying to convince Marco Verratti to come to Barcelona only to see him turn around and stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

So now what for Barcelona? The club seemed more than happy to spend €100m on Griezmann so where do they go from here and who should they look to instead?

The most popular answer is probably Christian Eriksen. The Tottenham midfielder looks a good fit for Barcelona and has been linked with a move to the Catalan club for some time.

However, prising him away from Spurs looks a tough (and very expensive) business. Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane have both signed big new contracts at the club, they will also move into their shiny new stadium next season and Spurs will not want him to go.

There’s a whole host of other midfielders who have been linked including Thiago, Miralem Pjanic and Frenkie de Jong. The Ajax midfielder looks the most likely option but at just 21 can’t be expected to go straight into the team and make a huge impact.

Bringing a move for Arthur forward is another option, but Gremio have made it pretty obvious they have no intention of letting him go this summer and would prefer a winter move.

Anthony Martial is another name linked and the Manchester United forward’s agent said recently he wants to leave the club after struggling for game time under Jose Mourinho.

The 22-year-old missed out on France’s World Cup squad but the word coming out from Old Trafford is that he is not for sale.

Martial can be a frustrating player to watch, but there’s no doubting his talent. He can play out wide or through the middle, has bags of pace and is a great finisher. He’d also likely cost less than the €100m seemingly set aside for Griezmann.
