Barça came into Tuesday’s Champions League quarter final second leg with a commanding 4-1 lead from the Camp Nou, but although some may have suspected qualification was now a mere formality, the Italians produced the most unexpected of comebacks.

Ernesto Valverde made no excuses in his press conference after the 3-0 reverse in Rome that spelt elimination for FC Barcelona from the Champions League. “We never felt comfortable in the game because Roma played very well” he said. “And we couldn’t get our own game going.”
